Instructions to make an inexpensive floor easel
The following instructions are for a large floor easel.  The directions can be modified to create a smaller easel if required.
The easel is constructed using 1’ x 2” materials that can be purchased from any lumber yard.  The Wood Source in Manotick Station is great spot to purchase good quality wood at reasonable costs.  They sell “shorts” in maple, oak, popular, birch and pine.

Materials Required
  • All wood should be 1” x 2” in preferred wood type.
  • 3 piece – 6’0’’ these are the three legs.
  • 2 pieces - 5’-0” these are the centre part of the easel
  • 1 piece – 2’-2” this is the lower support brace that holds the two front legs together and anchors the centre part of the easel in place.
  • 1 piece – 1’-4” this is the upper support brace that holds the two front legs together and anchors the centre part of the easel in place.
  • 1 piece - 4’-0” this is the movable horizontal piece that holds the bottom of the canvas.
  • 1 piece – 1’-3” this is the movable horizontal piece that holds the canvas at the top.
  • 1 piece – 2’-0” this is the back leg support
  • 2 pieces 8” these will support the back leg support at the centre part of the easel
  • 1 piece ½” doweling 12” long cut into 2 - 6” pieces to fit into leg holes to support horizontal pieces that will hold the canvas.
  • 2- 2 ½” bolts to secure the horizontal members that support the canvas at top and bottom.
  • 1 box of 1 ½” wood screws.
  • Wood glue
  • 2 hinges
  • 4’-0” of light chain
Instructions
  • Cut 1 - 6’- 0” piece at one end at 22 degrees this will be the back leg
  • Cut 2 - 6’-0” pieces at each end at 22 degrees.  Clamp both pieces together and drill ½ holes every six inches starting at around 15” from one end.  These pieces will be the two front legs.
  • Cut 2 – 5’-0” pieces these will be the centre support.
  • Cut 1 piece – 2’-2” at 22 degrees at each end and place it horizontally about 46” from top. This is the lower support brace that holds the two front legs together and anchors the centre part of the easel in place. The 22 degree angles will ensure that the legs are properly positioned.
  • Cut 1 piece – 1’-4” at 22 degrees at each end place 11” from top. This is the upper support brace that holds the two front legs together near the top and anchors the centre part of the easel in place.  The 22 degree angles will ensure that the legs are properly positioned.
  • Drill one hole in centre of the 1’-3” and the 4’-0” piece on the narrow face of the board.  These are the movable horizontal pieces that hold the top and bottom of the canvas and move up and down the centre part of the easel. The hole is to accept the 2 ½” bolts.  These bolts slide through the centre supports.
  • Lay legs, centre supports and two horizontal supports out on floor as per photo below and glue and screw all members together with 1 ½” wood screws.
  • Attach 2 – 8” pieces to lower horizontal support piece at back and chisel out 1” x 2” section to accept the back leg support.
  • Attach back leg support to back leg with hinge and put hinge at top and secure to centre supports. Cut chain in half and install from back leg to horizontal support.
  • Install movable horizontal canvas supports and put doweling in holes of legs.
