Composition Workshop with Charlie Spratt
Tuesday, May 15th, 2017 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
This workshop is for artists at any level working in water media. (No oil based paints).  The cost for this workshop is $30.00 per participant with a registration and payment deadline of March 6th 2018.

The workshop is intended for anyone painting representational work from landscapes to portraits. This is a great introduction for MAA members contemplating attending the MAA Plein Air Painting Program beginning in June.

Using a computer screen image of a landscape,  Charlie will demonstrate a time-tested way to organize what  artists perceive, into a plan to create a dynamic painting. This includes showing how;
    • to see nature in terms of shapes and design principles,
    • choosing a painting subject/content, and
    • how to make value sketches to develop a composition that enforces your intended artistic statement.

Participants will practice these concepts, including making sketches, using a different computer images than the demo. In the second phase, everyone is encouraged to begin a painting based on their final sketch plan. Finally, time permitting, Charlie will give a group critique of each unfinished work (optional for each artist), so that we may learn from each other.

There will not be a lunch break; however participants can eat during the session.
  • Participants should be set up and ready to start by 10:00 AM sharp and should supply their own lunch. The workshop will end at 3:00 PM
  • Participants will be required to bring their own materials, see the list of suggested materials below. There are 16 seats available for this event.

One of the problems landscape artists have – is effectively combining large powerful shapes with more passive/supportive shapes.  The composition of a painting can be made more effective by combining these strong shape interactions, along with suitable tonal values. We will also study colour temperature in composition, and look at the strong use of colour, both modified and unmodified.

Brian will demonstrate each morning, along with the lesson, and you will have time in the afternoon to respond with your own painting and application of the techniques demonstrated.

The cost for this workshop is $175.00 per participant with a registration and payment deadline of January 3rd 2018.
Participants will be required to bring their own materials. There will be a 1 hour lunch break – so bring a brown bag.
Space will be restricted to 14 participants and spaces will be assigned on a first come first serve basis.

When we take advantage of conditions like distortion, exaggeration and multiple perspective, we open ourselves to that unique condition of self that allows abstraction to dominate our response to subject.

Brian will demonstrate a landscape the first day, and a jazz figure duet (Saxophones) the second day.  You will have time each afternoon to respond with your own painting and application of the techniques demonstrated.

Abstraction is more a way of thinking/response, than a way of painting or technique.

The cost for the two-day workshop is $175.00 per participant with a registration and payment deadline of January 3rd 2018.
Participants will be required to bring their own materials. There will be a 1 hour lunch break – so bring a brown bag.
